NIMBY for X minutes:

Post by avclubvids »

I know that there is a scheduler for NIMBY, but another useful option would be a "NIMBY me for ____ minutes or until ____ system resource goes idle". There are a lot of times when leaving for the night that there is a local process running for an hour or two that would cause a render to crash, but once it is complete there is no reason that the machine has to be NIMBY'd. It would be great for artists to have a quick way to set a one-time NIMBY for a defined amount of time or to wait for a local process to complete.

You could launch a listener process to watch CPU, GPU, HDD, RAM, or Network usage to wait for it to go below a given threshold before releasing the NIMBY. As a user you could say "NIMBY me for 2 hours or until CPU usage drops below 10%" etc. That way people can leave for the night (or lunch) without either risking a crash or pulling a valuable machine off the farm all night.
